In fine November tradition, the girls and I started the garden for next year by planting garlic. I told myself I would not plant more than 72 garlic cloves, but like a potato chip more is better! I counted out 78 large cloves for planting, and my math was double checked by our youngest daughter.

I am also trying a new layout for the garden, which hopefully means less weeding and more tasty vegetables. The garlic is in an area typically reserved for the salad greens since it gets shade in mid-summer, around the time the garlic gets harvested. After the garlic gets harvested we may plant salad greens, beets, or basil.

I eliminated a few footpaths between the rows, but still made the beds easy to tend to in size. I plan to add a few more tomato and zucchini plants. We still haven’t hit that drowning in zucchini level yet. I planted five plants, but only three actually grew and produced. The tomato harvest in 2016 was less than stellar, with more green than red tomatoes. (They did box ripen nicely.) We look forward to harvesting more tomatoes and zucchini in 2017 with this new layout.

And now we wait for the snow to fall!
