See The Sugar Pixie Bake, See The Sugar Pixie Fail, See The Sugar Pixie Post! Yes my first fail that I am willing to blog about, because well it frustrates me to no end. I’ll even make a ‘Fail’ category!

My name is Krissy, and I can’t make a decent bread (involving yeast or kneading) product.

I made a small batch for my husband and I test (what a brave soul), and I tried it … it was bad, and I threw it out. No use in eating the extra calories if it’s bad! Here’s a picture of what the final product looked like.

I tried to make cinnamon rolls yesterday, because oh…I love them so much, but well apparently the feeling isn’t mutual. I know, I set up at least one point of failure by not using bread flour like all the recipes indicated. Yup, consulted several recipes and decided to use All Purpose flour (less gluten) instead of bread flour (more gluten). I thought I’d make things easier on myself since the oven wasn’t on and there was no particular warm place in the house by making and working the dough in the bread machine. Again, probably another bad idea. I also was feeling extra dangerous and used warmed POM juice instead of milk. It wasn’t scalding hot, around 80 degrees – so it wouldn’t kill the yeast.

I let everything work its magic for 1 1/2 hours in the bread machine. I checked it a few times wondering if that’s really what it was supposed to look like, a mushy brownish-pink ball of goo. I pulled it out, thinking it needed more flour – plus I needed to roll it so I could put the filling in. Well, it was a giant sticky mess and there was no rolling to be had. I broke off bits as best I could and put it into a pan to rise. It rose a teeny bit in over an hour, but I gave up already and just decided to take the cinnamon filling and spread it around on the dough before baking in the oven.

The bread came out chewy, doughy, dense and lacking in flavor. It just didn’t have the mouthfeel of warm, fluffy bread. It felt like goo in my mouth and no amount of icing on these would fix it! Off to the garbage they went and back I go to the drawing board! Maybe I just need to do these overnight cinnamon rolls, so I’m not tempted to screw anything up!
