Espresso coffee on the stovetopWelcome to the start of the day here in our house. When we decided to start making our own espresso at home, the next logical question was ‘What’s the best (cheapest) way to heat the milk?’ Adding milk straight from the fridge cooled the coffee too much, and heating it in the microwave made a not so pretty skim.

Through several trials, and some Googling we finally arrived at the milk foam method we like the most : foaming your own milk in a glass jar. Come check it out!

We were drinking Cafe con Leches quite religiously for the first few weeks after getting our stovetop espresso pot. Initially while we waited for the coffee to brew, we’d heat up about 1/3 of a coffee cup of milk with a teaspoon of sugar. It seemed great in theory, and tasted really good – the only part we did not like was the unsightly skim layer it created.

After some searching Dave found an article on Lifehacker about making your own milk foam. The article is based on a blog post over at The Kitchn. It works brilliantly, and it’s fun for the kids to do if you want. /flexes her own arm muscle.

This is quick and easy enough to do while your favorite cup of coffee is brewing. (How to make your own cup of coffee using a Italian Stovetop espresso maker.)

Make your own Milk Foam

Adapated from Harold McGee’s book On Food and Cooking and The Kitchn

Ingredients:

  • Milk (2% makes a pretty nice foam, whole doesn’t seem to foam that much better, but use any type of dairy you normally use)

Equipment:

  • Microwave
  • Glass jar with lid
  • Arm or two to shake with

Step 1 : Get a glass jar with a lid and fill with milk. The amount depends how on how many cups of coffee you’re making.  We use about 1/4 cup of 2% milk for two (2) cups of coffee.

Ours glass jar came from a restaurant we had a drink in. It has a spiffy handle too.

Step 2 : Screw the lid onto the jar and begin shaking vigorously. Shake between 30 and 60 seconds. Your goal is to get it really foamy like the picture below.

Step 3 : Remove the lid and cook in the microwave for 42 seconds. (Yes, 42 IS the meaning of life, and foam) Really you can cook between 30 and 60 seconds depending on the strength of your microwave.

Step 4 : Add to your favorite drink! Recommended holding the foam back with a spoon while your pour the milk in. Then spoon on top.
