Observing Winter from inside PhippsPssst…I’ve been to the future and it’s AMAZING I tell you!

Somewhere under all the ice, snow and frigid cold weather Mother Nature is working her magic for the upcoming seasons, but I can not wait that long! My daughter and I decided to take advantage of a snow day due to subzero windchill and grabbed our member card to Phipps Conservatory.

Pittsburghers, this membership is worth every last cent especially in the winter. It is so comfortable (ie: WARM) inside and smells amazing. It’s like hitting the fast forward button to spring as the snow is piling up outside. I have been going to Phipps since I was a kid, my husband I used to walk over to the outside gardens in college for some peace and quiet, and Dave proposed to me in the Serpentine Room amongst some of my favorite flowers. I love going there, almost anytime of year (August was a bit hot while waiting for Romero the Corpse Flower to bloom, still worth it!)

Right now it’s the Bonsai and Orchid show. You to get vote for your favorite bonsai plant by dropping a small pebble into a glass jar next to each specimen. My daughter and I had a hard time picking our favorite! I would love to be able to maintain a bonsai plant, and did you know they’re really an outdoor plant and not an indoor one?

There’s lots of beauty to see inside and outside at Phipps. My kids looooooove playing in a small portion of the outdoor gardens when it’s nicer out. I though the snow on the circle stone path looked really beautiful.

Still on display are the trains, with plenty of dinosaurs! Don’t forget to pick up a scavenger hunt sheet for the kids before you go in! (Kids get to pick out a free prize in the gift shop.)

And finally one of gardens I love to follow through the season is the Phipps indoor vegetable garden. Many of the items grown at Phipps are used in their cafe! This garden is right by the Kids Market, hopefully a subtle influence on getting kids into gardening and eating vegetables! Occasionally at Phipps they have a ‘Pot a Plant’ station open where you get to plant and take home a seedling. Sometimes it’s a flower, other times it’s an herb or vegetable. Over the last year we got Marigolds, Basil and Swiss Chard. They come in a biodegradable container made of coconut, so you can just plant the whole thing in the ground.

So hop on over to Phipps and check it out today during these cold winter days. The price of admission can be applied to a yearly pass! Make a day of it and have a bite to eat at the Café Phipps!
