Aww come on here! Some woodland creatures have made their way into our garden, and into our beets! OF COURSE, they go for the biggest ones to date. These were about the size of a softball. I tore the greens off and left the beets in the garden so hopefully whatever is hungry goes back for these.

I’m not completely surprised this happened, because it happens every year. The creatures have been kind so far with this as the only damage, but I do expect more damage in the next few weeks. Everything must be stocking up for winter!

Let them eat ... beets

Not a total loss, here’s some other things we pulled out. Our first carrots! (Which I bet will be on the creature’s next to eat list!) The rest of the beets we pulled were about size of tennis balls. We were going to wait to pull the carrots out, but I don’t want to lose any more veggies than I have to waiting for the ‘right time’ to harvest.

So far the carrots are doing well. About four inches long, and all nice and straight. All the thinning we did this year produced wonderful results, versus last year in ‘hands off’ fingerling sized carrots. Still pretty amazing you can throw some seeds in the ground, and with some love you get food!

First carrots: Late Summer Garden Haul #gardening

I cleared out our salad green section that had gone to seed and made room for more salad greens and a spinach challenge. The cooler weather that is coming is perfect, or should be perfect for these greens. I had some random packets of spinach seeds I bought, and that were gifted to me. I made a few rows of three different types, so we’ll see how it goes. I have always had luck with Burpee seeds, so not worried about that batch but the seeds from other companies have been poor performing in my garden. I’ll keep you all updated (and post the names once I look at the packets – again!)

We have about another 1.5-2 months of growth left in the gardening before we till in the compost and plant the garlic! When you start experiencing time by the cycles of the garden you realize how fast time flies (let alone having kids help in the garden, doubly fast!)
