Update: November 2016 – location closed

This past weekend we decided to try yet another burger place that has come to Pittsburgh. After watching the transformation the old Qdoba restaurant into Burger 21 we checked out the menu online and decided to go as one of our Saturday afternoon dates (read: without kids).

While reading their website, come to find out Burger 21 was a vision set forward by same group as Melting Pot! Now the milkshake flavors made sense, their first location opened in Tampa, FL in 2010. (Just as we were on our way out of living in Florida!) Another cool thing about the company is how they give back:

As part of Burger 21’s culture, we are committed to the communities that we serve – with each restaurant donating 10 percent of the day’s proceeds to a local charity or school on the 21st of each month. To date, Burger 21 has provided more than $120,000 in contributions to local charities and schools.

The Short and Sweet: It was Good and I would go again

The restaurant was very clean inside. The booths sat really close to the table, but not sure if it was like that for all or just ours (did it accidentally get pushed too close together.)

To begin our meal we ordered a Ybor City Double Espresso milkshake. The size of shake for the price was okay. (Used to splitting the rather large Burgatory shakes.) The espresso flavor came through well in the shake, and it was not sweet like a lot of shakes. The chocolate covered espresso beans were a nice touch on top.

At Burger 21 you do not pick and choose burger toppings, rather you pick a burger from the menu. Again, other places (Five Guys, Burgatory) have spoiled me in selecting my own toppings.

Burgers were cooked to order (medium = pink in the middle), but they do give you the option have it cooked well done. The patty was well seasoned, and the burger was nice and juicy. The toasted brioche bun held the burger together nicely for the duration of the meal. The vegetable toppings were fresh and crispy. Loved the haystack onion rings on the Tex Mex burger.

The fries were fries, not very salty which was nice. If you’re a fan of McDonald’s style fries these are for you. The cheese and ale sauce was a good pick. Do not miss the sauce bar!!! We did (/sad faces) because it was right next to the fountain drink options, but will not miss it next time! (Not mentioned/offered to us, because we surely would have checked it out!)

In addition to beef patties they also have chicken and fish options, hot dogs, and  chopped salads featuring many of the same toppings you would find in their other sandwich selections. The dessert options include milkshakes, floats, and even ice cream sundaes. Burger 21 also offers online ordering for to-go orders, which is a very nice feature if you’re looking to pick something up on the way home. (Much love to restaurants with online ordering, huge time saver!)
