Summer Reading Clubs at Northland Public Library
To keep things interesting during the summer we join the summer reading club at one of our local libraries. Some of our favorite summer activities and programs are those Northland Public Library puts together. There’s age appropriate activities for all ages, even adults too!
Each summer there’s a new theme for the children’s programming. The theme this year is all about super heroes!
- Side Kicks Read-To-Me Summer Reading Club is for children not yet able to read on their own.
- Super Readers Summer Reading Club is for children going into kindergarten through soon-to-be fifth graders.
- Unmask! Teen Summer Reading Club is for students in grades six through twelve.
There has been two great additions this year that makes it even easier to be in the Summer Reading Club. The first is online registration for SRC, which gave me the ability to sign up our kids while riding down the interstate in South Carolina on vacation. The second addition is online registration for various SRC events. Previously, you had to call or show up at the library to register. Again, I signed our kids for a few sessions while riding down I-95! Got to love technology!
There’s been fun events like “Thursdays Under The Tree” where we built cars with with random items like bottles, fruit containers, dowels, bubble tea straws, CDs, DVDs, cups, and more. The next week we did some origami and paper airplanes.
In addition to the weekly Thursdays Under the Tree, there’s been special events like meeting animals from the Pittsburgh Zoo, Picture Book Picnic, Meet a Marine Biologist, Jeff the Geode Guy, and Screenprinting! Our kids made these really awesome shirts with the SRC logo. I wish I had brought a shirt (even though my child suggested I just use the shirt I was wearing….)
There’s plenty to do depending on how active you want to be and where your child’s interests are. The hour or two my kids are in a session (one – two times a week) also gives me a chance to get some quiet reading time in, or organize my rows as an Adopt Row Volunteer. It’s a win – win either way!
The SRC fun does not stop on Hot Dog Day! It’s one of the best parts of the summer, but Northland has a great kids and adult programming year-round. So stop in, and check out the library today!
