Chain-Mail in the Kitchen: Cleaning Cast Iron and more
Yes, you read the title correctly. I got chain mail in my kitchen and it is awesome! I really try to avoid uni-taskers in the kitchen, but this gadget won me over with its first use. It was a combination of this “Soap on cast iron, are you serious???” secret on PostSecret.com and a post on America’s Test Kitchen/Cook’s Illustrated about the best way to clean cast iron. For about $20, I figured it was worth asking for the chain mail scrubber as a present, and if it didn’t work out, well the Barbies or My Little Ponies would have a new cape to wear.
To my surprise I actually received the CM Scrubber by KnappMade (buy*), and I wish I had found this sooner! The worst part of using cast-iron and even metal cookware is the scrubbing. This is way better than using paper towels, coarse salt or boiling water to clean cast iron. I say bring on more cast iron cooking, because this is 4″ x 4″ piece of 18/20 stainless steel is a dream!
Grilling and Cleaning Cast Iron
Dave made Chicken Enchiladas from “Yeah, You Can Grill That” (yes, everything from start to finish on the grill) and the skillet was caked in sauce. I did some preliminary removal of the sauce and decided I’d blog about the CM scrubber. Using just water and the scrubber all the bits came off the skillet without ruining the seasoning of the skillet. I even used it to clean up bacon leftovers/grease on my Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless Steel pan a few days after So dreamy, but do not recommend using on non-stick.
Cleaning the CM Scrubber
If the CM scrubber is dirty or greasy, add just a bit of soap to the scrubber and roll it around in your hands. It’s pretty zen moment just rolling it around in your hands. Rinse in warm water and lay to dry for the next use. It doesn’t take up much space in a drawer or maybe hang on a hook near your sink for its next use. This gadget is a must have if you have any cast iron in your house.
Check out the CM Scrubber website for a How-To video and a free cookbook when you buy two or more scrubbers!
