Oops! My mouth just keeps falling onto burgers and sandwiches at the new Burgatory location in the North Hills. It’s been a few months since we have been able to hit any of the Burgatory locations, so we are sort of making up for lost time – I have been there three times in less than a month. My favorite thing to do is Build my Own burger! There’s so many options to make your meal your own.

Update: This location has been open almost a year now, and it’s still great every time we go. Our favorite thing to do now is get some burgers to go and open a nice bottle at home. We go at least once or twice month (see my Yelp checkins), and initially I thought we would get tired of the food, but when this location consistently delivers a tasty meal each time it’s hard NOT to keep wanting to go back.

Visit One: Weekend after they opened

We took our kids to see Zootopia, and then decided to get lunch after. (I get there is some irony to eating burgers after watching a ton of animals in a movie.) I got us in line via the NoWait app, and we were ready to be seated by the time we walked over!

I went with my typical burger just see if this location was as good as the others. Our server for lunch was really attentive to our child’s food allergies, and took special care with our order and made us aware that we should probably not get the milkshakes, but the float at the end of the kids meal would be OK. I love when restaurants really go the extra mile to feel comfortable when you’re dining there!

My build: (Beef with Bayou Cajun rub, on brioche bun with roasted garlic mayo, organic greens, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.) Very delicious!

Visit Two: Friends from our kids’ school

A group of us moms from school and other school related activities made plans to hit Burgatory for lunch the Monday after the Pittsburgh Marathon. It was a fun time and all eight of us got some pretty different things! I decided to mix things up and add….cheese….cheddar cheese to my burger. (Every once in awhile I like to splurge for the cheese!) This was the most perfect burger ever. It was totally unexpected how good, and on point this burger was.

My build: (Beef with Bayou Cajun rub, on brioche bun with Farmhouse cheddar, roasted garlic mayo, organic greens, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.) The perfect burger, and our server was awesome too.

I can only think of a few other burgers that have been so utterly simply, yet so delicious.

  • Renaissance Pittsburgh – Room service hamburger after our wedding
  • Margaritaville in Key West – Cheeseburger in Paradise
  • My House – Dave makes some ridiculously awesome buns and burgers, so why go anywhere else really except Burgatory.
  • Umami – Palo Alto, CA – and other locations in US. While the truffle and umami burger were indeed very delicious and unique, there’s other burgers I’d put above it. Definitely good, am I craving it -eh.

Visit Three: Is it a burger or a sandwich?

Mr. Pixie was working at home one day while his car was in for the yearly inspection. We decided to visit Burgatory for lunch where I would make good on my claim to finally try a chicken sandwich from the build your own burger menu. I was really thinking outside on the bun on this creation.

The best part of this burger was the Bayou Cajun rub, because it easily stood out. The cajun rub on the beef burger is a bit more subtle, but on this chicken it took center stage. The foccacia was okay, a bit dry and there was more bun than chicken, maybe pound or butterfly the chicken? (The server did give me the choice between breaded or grilled chicken.

My build: (Chicken with Bayou Cajun rub, on Herbed Focaccia with smoked gouda, roasted garlic mayo, organic greens, lettuce, tomato, and red onion.) Very delicious!

While this sandwich was good, I still left wanting a hamburger. The chicken was cooked pefectly, and it was nice and spicy. I left thinking that this would be great naked (no bun) or topless (no top).

I know we’re going to Burgatory again because my brother in law and sister in law will be in for Memorial Day. It’s been awhile since I have had a burger with Peppercorn Rub and Truffled Shallot Aioli, so maybe I’ll try that combo
