New Home – First meals
It’s been almost a week since all of us moved into the house. Unpacking has been going well. I’d say the kitchen took up the most time, and guarantee the placement of glasses, silverware (now that I found it), pots, pans, cooking accessories will probably change spots many times before we finally get a flow going.
Another change in this house is GAS! We get to cook on a GAS stovetop! I grew up learning to cook and bake using a gas stove but that was well over ten years ago, after I finally figured out how to cook on electric. Dave went grocery shopping the night before we moved the girls to the house. He bought just enough essentials until we could figure out what we needed from the grocery store. (My in-laws gave us random groceries from their BOGO stockpile.) I requested enough ingredients to make Grilled Cheese and or Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. Something quick and easy so I could get back to unpacking.
The Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwich
The first day we brought the girls to the house was just before lunch time. I put some butter in a skillet, turned on the burner and proceeded to get all my other ingredients – when I turn around to see, very burnt butter in my pan. The heat wasn’t all that high either! So I wiped the butter out and started again and proceeded to make the most amazing grilled cheese sandwiches I remembered from my own childhood. In less than five minutes the sandwich was done with just enough crispy edges and oh so yummy gooey cheese inside.
- 2 pieces of Wonder SmartWheat Bread
- 1 1/2 slices of Land o’ Lakes Yellow American Cheese
- 1/2 tbs or so of butter or butter subsitute.
- Melt butter over low heat in a skillet
- Coat one side of each slice of bread with melted butter
- Place cheese inside the sandwich.
- Cook until golden brown on both sides.
Traditional Bacon and Eggs
Dave’s first attempt at cooking came that weekend when he made us all bacon and eggs! I warned him to do all his prep work first and then start cooking. The gas stove top is ‘ready to go’ unlike electric where it’s more like ‘I’ll get back to you on that….’ Dave first cooked the bacon in the skillet, and then made the scramble eggs using the leftover bacon fat. We happened to have some leftover diced tomatoes from the previous night’s dinner, so I threw those on top of the eggs for taste and color!
Dave and I are looking forward to lots more baking and cooking in our kitchen. There’s even a garden in the back, but we don’t have much of a clue as to what’s in there really. For now, the deer and rabbits seem to enjoy free range of the garden, but you better believe that won’t be the case next year!https://www.thesugarpixie.net/2011/07/18/new-home-first-meals/New Home - First mealsFamilyRecipesbacon, breakfast, cheese, cooking, eggs, grilled cheese, lunchIt's been almost a week since all of us moved into the house.
